The ABC’s of Grief and Loss
THERE ARE SOME LOSSES that are easy to identify - for example, losing one's keys or the death of a loved one. There are other losses that are imperceptible even to the individual but still cause us to grieve and can be mourned. This workshop will help participants identify losses and recommend ways of coping with this ubiquitous phenomenon.
Oral Care for Cancer Patients
Join us in a special workshop given by Dr. Suarez Piedad, Department Chair of Geriatrics, Special Needs and Behavioral Sciences at the USC Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry, to learn about the importance of oral care during and after cancer treatment.

Life and Taxes
Join us on March 22 on a special workshop on taxes taught by our AYA council member Kenny Chu. Kenny has almost 20 years of relevant work experience in the tax field, starting his career at a major “Big 4” public accounting firm, and is currently serving as a Vice President of Alts Tax at a reputable asset management firm. He graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles, and received a Masters in Business Taxation from the University of Southern California. Kenny has been an active member in the AYA@USC community, serving as the AYA council member as well as joining Team AYA@USC in the Los Angeles Marathon each March.

Conversing with Kids: How to Engage in Meaningful Conversations About a Cancer Diagnosis
Adults often wonder how to talk to kids about cancer, or whether or not they should tell them at all. Learn more about what every kid needs to hear when a loved one has cancer, and the best ways you can help support them through their big feelings and questions.

This special event is designed to bring our young adults with cancer (ages 18-39) and their families together to have a great time at the Los Angeles Zoo. Besides FREE zoo admissions, guests will also enjoy a catered gourmet lunch at the zoo as well as special group activities to bond with other families.

Conquer Fatigue After Cancer Treatment
As a childhood survivor of Hodgkin’s lymphoma and breast cancer, Dr. Perdomo developed many common long-term adverse effects associated with extensive radiation therapy, aggressive chemotherapy, and multiple surgical interventions. Dr. Perdomo was an Assistant Professor in Clinical Physical Therapy at the University of Southern California for 20 years. She has over 40 years of clinical practice focusing on oncology rehabilitation. She developed both the USC curricular content and outpatient clinical services regarding the comprehensive management of oncological-related impairments and lymphedema. Her cancer experiences and knowledge as a physical therapist provided her with unique insights regarding healing, rehabilitation, and reclaiming quality of life after treatment.

The 5th AYA@USC Getaway Retreat
Thanks to the generous support of the Audrey Irmas Foundation for Social Justice, we will be hosting our 5th Annual AYA@USC Young Adult Getaway Retreat at Camp Ronald McDonald to bring together young adult cancer patients and survivors to create a supportive community, learn new talent and skills, enjoy performances, or hang out in a relaxing, healing, and beautiful setting. This weekend will leave you inspired, relaxed, and with some new friendships. We look forward to a getaway weekend of sharing, laughing, and celebrating together!

Navigate the Unexpected Challenges of Cancer
Life can be challenging, life with a medical condition can be particularly challenging. We face obstacles on every journey we make. Join us in this new mental health series with Dr. Shima Taghavi to find out how to navigate these unexpected challenges.
Dr. Taghavi completed her pre-doctoral residency at the National Psychology Training Consortium, where she developed a behavioral health program and served as a therapist in a rural primary care clinic working with patients across all age spans. For her post-doctoral training, Dr. Taghavi completed her fellowship at City of Hope Medical Center providing psychological interventions to cancer patients.
Dr. Taghavi is trained in diagnostic testing, including cognitive, achievement, socio-emotional, and projective assessments of children and adults. She has worked with couples, and families, and facilitated groups. She has experience working with depression, anxiety, trauma, issues related to life transition, grief, and loss, issues related to immigration, and interpersonal and relational issues.
